Whether you tie 'em or buy 'em, carp have no trouble eating a properly
presented fly.
I spent a lot of time experimenting with different carp patterns for
bottom feeding fish. They will occasionally feed on top, but not very
often. What you are looking for in a subsurface pattern is:
- Flow / movement. Think of soft hackle flies, light rubber, etc.
- Enough weight to get the fly to the bottom in a reasonable amount of time (3-4 seconds)
- Light enough that the fly will not make a lot of noise on entry when you're casting right at the fishes head.
For 99% of my carp fishing I use a fly I designed called the Sucker Punch.
It has all the characteristics listed above.
You may buy the Sucker Punch from me, or visit the commercial flies
page for ideas of what to buy if you're not a tier, or other patterns you might copy if you are.
