Trash on the Fly Guide Service [contact me]
on the water & rates  -  photos  -  carp flies  -  about me  -  other trash
Hello, my name is Dave Speer, although many of my fly buddies call me Long-Haired Dave. I grew up in Montana and cut my fishing teeth in some of the great Rocky Mountain rivers and creeks. Over the years I've lived in a great variety of places and had a chance to fish for a lot of different species.

As much fun as it is to catch a trout or a bonefish, a bass or a redfish, I have been bitten by the carp fishing bug. I just absolutely love fly fishing for carp, and even other species sometimes considered "trash" fish. In fact, that's how I came up with the name of my guide service.

To me, the phrase "Trash on the Fly" hints at something exotic, maybe even something new and exciting. I absolutely do not believe that carp or any other fish should be considered as trash, but rather as a part of nature's balance like anything else. I use the term "trash" because it sort of evokes a naughty sense of adventure. To me, it's a term of endearment.

In any case I hope you'll join me for a day of sight fishing for these bronze beauties. We'll learn a lot together, and I can help you cut down the learning curve for catching these difficult yet rewarding fish.

An 11.44 pound carp that is the current Lake Grapevine record. The fish was later released unharmed, but probably wondered what was going on during the photo shoot in my front yard.

I am also a Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor, but trying to combine casting lessons and carp fishing doesn't make economic sense for my clients. Contact me if you'd like to work on your casting goals-- I don't charge for that.
